On Geography: The World
and Its People
Client :
Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, a division of The McGraw-Hill
Companies.
Objective :
The development and production of a series of 35 teacher
support materials (ancillaries) and transparencies in geography.
Challenge :
This project included designing a variety of maps, charts,
and graphs, researching and writing original content and enrichment
activities, and designing a visually and editorially consistent
production. Among the challenges SETTINGPACE met for Glencoe/McGraw-Hill
were tight schedule demands, finding reliable sources,
maintaining editorial consistency with the student book, and
managing the sheer volume of pages.
Solution :
The Glencoe/McGraw-Hill geography project was an epic one.
It required the totality of SETTINGPACE Design, Development
and Production.
We customized the design and layout of the ancillaries and
transparencies, keeping in mind the details of who would be
using it, down to how much space the children would need to
write.
We created a visual style sheet, solving consistency problems
before they happened, and bridged traditional human talents
of illustration with new technology. SETTINGPACE designed
custom borders, brush strokes, and patterns to meet the specific
needs of the project. By making good visual decisions initially,
we were able to save our client time and money via seamless
progression.
As content developers, we took great care in researching.
In order to secure the most up-to-date and accurate information,
SETTINGPACE purchased a variety of recent, high-end source
materials including atlases, books, and maps. We qualified
and hired writers to research and write original content,
maps, and enrichment activities, and made consistent, weekly
contact with Glencoe’s editors and directors to check
that their needs were being met.
Through great attention to detail, strong organization
and persistent management, SETTINGPACE partnered with Glencoe
to create a product of outstanding craftsmanship.
